beth and Anke in Mexico

January 11, 2005

Yup we found the ocean, it`s darn pretty, and just as big as ever. I took a snorkeling trip yesterday; anke and steppl didn`t want to come, but I had fun hanging out with strangers. I notice that i`m used to traveling alone and tho I love having company this time, I also like to have those travelling alone sort of moments, meeting folks. I hung out with a german woman who kept wanting to buy me something to eat, as a way of showing her niceness and appreciation for me, she made an event of the giving in a way that I didnīt like so much. And a recently married lesbian pair from Switzerland, they were fun to talk to and funny how they kept indicating their hope that I was travelling with only women and kept talking about places that are still run by ancient matriarchies. And the second mate of our boat who was doing the typical tourist flirt, "are you married? Do you have a boyfriend? Why not, don't you like the men? Have you ever been in love? Have you even been in love with a Mexican man? You could stay here and work with me..." that's about the progression. I was talking with him because I enjoyed speaking Spanish, while simoultaneously wanting to keep in conversation with franziska and sabine, cuz I enjoyed their personalities and the queer connection, while simultaneously trying to answer Linda's offers tho I wasn't hungry and didn`t really want anything to drink "it's okay, you can accept it!" she said. But I wanted to be in the water (besides that that all wasn`t as exhausting as it sounds, I really did enjoy the situation)!!

i've never snorkelled before and oh martymarty, if we're still close friends in ten years let's all five of us go somewhere where we can snorkel. I felt so free, swinging back and forth with the surf, hanging upsidedown in the water, held down by the weight of my feet sticking in the air. In just a little area there's so much to discover and explore, coral formation and shells and colors and the fish, oh the fish! All different kids and some of them so yellow, so blue, so shy or so oblivious. There were big purplybluishgrey ones with long fins like angel fish, tall and long and flat from side to side, and they were always being pushed around by the back and forth of the water, waving like cloth in the wind.

I'm a little bit sunburnt now. I'm such a sunburn wimp. When I was a kid I always got brown gradually as the year progressed, cuz I swam outdoors all year round. My dad called me his little brown bear. I'm not badly burnt, but i'm not used to it. I'll enjoy being browner; I recognize myself better that way.
